President Donald Trump doesn’t think some people belong in the United States.
Specifically, people from Haiti, El Salvador and Africa.
“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump asked lawmakers Thursday during a meeting in the Oval Office.
That’s what he called them — “shithole countries.”
If that offends your delicate sensibilities, good. You should be offended. Because when Trump profanely describes Haiti, El Salvador and Africa as wastelands, he’s not just scorning their governments, economies and cultures; he’s dismissing their people as less than human.
According to the president, Haitians, Salvadorans and Africans possess no inherent value, no dignity. They do not deserve the safety, freedom and opportunity offered by the United States.
Not like people from Norway, for instance. We need to encourage more immigrants from Norway, Trump said Thursday.
The racism and ignorance sting. Just ask Rep. Mia Love, a Republican from Saratoga Springs who represents Utah’s 4th District. Her parents came from Haiti.
She called Trump’s comments “unkind, divisive and elitist.” They “fly in the face of our nation’s values,” she tweeted Thursday.
“My parents came from one of those countries, took an oath of allegiance to it, and took on the responsibilities of everything that being a citizen comes with.” she continued. “They never took a thing from our federal government. They worked hard, paid taxes and rose from nothing to take care of and provide opportunities for their children. That’s the American Dream. The President must apologize to both the American people and the nations he so wantonly maligned.”
All people possess dignity. All people possess value — even those from Haiti, El Salvador and Africa.
Despite what Donald Trump believes.
