Ogden Raptors return for ‘Golden Spike Night’ in 5-game homestand

Tuesday , July 24, 2018 - 3:56 PM

As the first-half division champion Ogden Raptors open the second half with a five-game homestand from July 25-29, they’ll be helping celebrate a big anniversary for the state (and the nation).

Friday, July 27, brings “Golden Spike Night.” The Raptors are participating in the yearlong celebration leading up to the 150th anniversary of the driving of the final spike at Promontory Summit that finished the transcontinental railroad.

Players will sport specialty jerseys featuring a photo of the moment crews from the Union and Central Pacific railroads posed to celebrate on May 10, 1869, at the completion of their work that forever changed the nation.

The game-worn, one-time jerseys will be sold during the game near the front gates. At $150 per jersey, proceeds will be donated to the Union Station Foundation. Pledged buyers can pick up their jerseys in the ticket office right after the game.

ROCKIES, CHUKARS IN TOWN

The Raptors return to facing fellow South Division opponents after 14 straight games against teams from the North Division. Ogden hosts Grand Junction for three games and Idaho Falls for two during the homestand.

Those two opponents finished neck-and-neck for second place in the first half after the Raptors ran away with the title. They join Ogden in comprising the top-hitting teams in the league.

Grand Junction brings hot-hitting shortstop Coco Montes. He’s played nearly every game for the Rockies and leads the Pioneer League with a batting average of .397. Needless to say, the season for this year’s 15th-round draft pick out of South Florida is going well.

Rockies’ first baseman Grant Lavigne is fourth in the league at .368. The Rockies (42) are challenging Ogden (47) in the team home-run race.

Idaho Falls leads the league in team batting average at an impressive .309 and is tops in stolen bases at 62. The Chukars will be without outfielder Kyle Isbel, however. This year’s third-round draft pick was moved up to Single-A one week ago after hitting .381 in 25 games for the Chukars.

Ogden went 4-4 against Idaho Falls and 5-3 against Grand Junction in the first half.
